« Back to Glossary Index

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a large-scale energy storage system based on the use of electrochemical batteries, capable of storing the energy produced by renewable plants during periods of low demand, returning it on demand or at peak times. The BESS system offers several advantages, one of the main benefits being stabilising the electricity grid and balancing energy supply and demand.
