Battery Management System (BMS)

Battery Management System (BMS)

« Back to Glossary Index

The Battery Management System (BMS) is a system designed to monitor, control and protect the batteries used in electric vehicles, which require proper management to ensure optimal performance, safety and durability.
The BMS constantly monitors the status of the batteries, including parameters such as voltage, power, temperature and residual capacity. This information is used to assess the state of charge of the batteries, prevent overcharging and over-discharging, and optimise the overall efficiency and safety of the power system.
This system protects batteries from adverse conditions such as extreme temperatures, short circuits and voltage fluctuations. It can also balance battery cells, i.e. ensure that all cells within a multi-cell battery are evenly charged and discharged to prevent uneven degradation.
In addition to essential battery management, many BMSs also provide real-time information on battery status to vehicle users and operators, such as remaining capacity, estimated range and charge and discharge data.
