Fossil energy

Fossil energy

« Back to Glossary Index

Fossil energy is a form of energy obtained from the combustion of natural resources that have formed over millions of years through the decomposition process of organic materials. The primary fossil energy sources include crude oil, coal and natural gas.
Fossil energy has historically been the dominant energy source for humankind because of its high energy density and relative ease of access. This form of energy is generally used for electricity generation, heating, transport and manufacturing.
Fossil energy vehicles, such as gasoline and diesel, use oil-derived fuel. These vehicles burn the fuel inside an internal engine to generate the energy needed for propulsion, producing harmful emissions. When fossil fuels are burned, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (Co2) are emitted, contributing to climate change and the rise in global temperature.
On the other hand, electric vehicles do not directly emit pollutants and can reduce environmental impact.
